Churros Dough
- 1 cup water
- 1/3 cup unsalted butter cut into cubes
- 2 Tbsp granulated sugar
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- oil spray
Cinnamon-Sugar Coating
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 3/4 tsp ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Prepare the baking mat: Put a silicone baking mat on a baking sheet and spray it with oil spray to prevent sticking.
- Make the dough base: In a medium saucepan, combine water, butter, sugar, and salt. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
- Add flour and cook dough: Reduce heat to medium-low and add the flour to the saucepan. Stir constantly with a rubber spatula until the dough comes together and becomes smooth.
- Cool the dough: Remove the pan from heat and transfer the dough to a mixing bowl. Let it cool for 4 minutes.
- Incorporate eggs and vanilla: Add eggs and vanilla extract to the dough and mix with an electric hand mixer or stand mixer until the dough forms a ball with a gluey mashed potato texture. Use your hands to press lumps together if needed and transfer to a large piping bag fitted with a star-shaped tip.
- Pipe the churros: Pipe churros onto the greased baking mat in 4-inch lengths and cut the dough with scissors.
- Refrigerate: Refrigerate the piped churros on the baking sheet for 1 hour to set.
- Air fry churros: Transfer churros carefully to the air fryer basket, leaving about 1/2-inch space between them. Spray with oil spray. Depending on your air fryer size, cook in batches. Air fry at 375 degrees F for 12 minutes until golden brown.
- Prepare cinnamon sugar: In a shallow bowl, mix granulated sugar and ground cinnamon.
- Coat churros and serve: Immediately toss the hot churros in the cinnamon-sugar mixture until fully coated. Serve warm with Nutella or chocolate dipping sauce.
Notes
- Using a silicone baking mat helps prevent the churros from sticking while piping and refrigerating.
- Ensure the dough is cooled before adding eggs to avoid cooking them prematurely.
- Refrigeration sets the churros shape and makes air frying easier without losing form.
- Spraying the churros with oil spray before air frying enhances crispiness without deep frying.
- Adjust air frying time slightly depending on your appliance to avoid burning.
- Serve churros immediately for best texture and flavor.
