Description

Juicy hamburger steaks cooked to perfection and smothered in a rich, creamy dill sauce, making for a comforting and flavorful main course.

Ingredients

Scale

Hamburger Steaks

  • 1.3 pounds ground beef
  • 4 tbsp breadcrumbs
  • 1 yellow onion – grated
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream
  • 1 egg

Creamy Dill Sauce

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 yellow onion – diced
  • 2 garlic cloves – minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup low sodium chicken broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp chopped dill – more for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the hamburger steaks: In a large bowl, grate the onion and add ground beef, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, heavy cream, and egg. Mix gently with your hands until just combined. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into a ball. Flatten each ball using the palm of your hand or a spatula to about ¾ inch (2 cm) thickness. Set aside.
  2. Chop fresh ingredients: Finely dice the onion, mince the garlic cloves, and chop the fresh dill. Set these aside for the sauce.
  3. Cook the hamburger steaks: Heat olive oil and unsalted butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the hamburger steaks and cook for 5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through. Remove the steaks from the skillet and place on a clean plate.
  4. Make the creamy dill sauce: In the same skillet, reduce heat to low and add the diced onion and minced garlic. Cook for about 2 minutes until fragrant and softened. Add salt, black pepper, and all-purpose flour, stirring to combine and cook the flour slightly.
  5. Add liquids to the sauce: Pour in the low sodium chicken broth, scraping the bottom of the skillet with a wooden spoon to loosen browned bits. Simmer for 2 minutes to thicken the sauce slightly.
  6. Finish the sauce: Stir in the heavy cream and chopped dill. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer for 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens to a creamy consistency.
  7. Combine steaks and sauce: Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet with the sauce. Simmer together for 5-6 minutes until steaks are heated through and no longer pink in the center.
  8. Serve: Garnish with extra chopped dill and freshly ground black pepper. Serve the hamburger steaks hot, spooning the creamy dill sauce over each serving.

Notes

  • To make the patties more tender, avoid overmixing the meat with the other ingredients.
  • Fresh dill is key for the best flavor, but dried dill can be used in a pinch—use about 1 tablespoon if substituting.
  • Ensure the sauce simmers gently to prevent the cream from curdling.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
  • Breadcrumbs help bind the patties but can be replaced with crushed crackers or oats if preferred.
