Delightfully fun and easy to make, Dirt and Worm Cake Mix Cookies combine moist chocolate cake mix cookies topped with rich chocolate ganache, crushed Oreos, and playful gummy worms for a spooky, kid-friendly treat perfect for parties or Halloween.
Ingredients
Scale
Cookie Dough
- 1 (15.25 ounce) box chocolate cake mix
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup canola oil
Topping
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/3 cup heavy cream
- 3/4 cup crushed Oreos (about 9 whole cookies)
- 18 gummy worms
Instructions
- Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper to ensure the cookies don’t stick during baking.
- Make cookie dough: In a large bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix, eggs, and canola oil. Mix until a soft sticky dough forms, which will be the base for the cookies.
- Shape and bake cookies: Use a medium cookie scoop to drop dough balls onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart to allow room for spreading. Bake for 12 minutes until the edges are set and cookies are cooked through.
- Cool cookies: Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. This helps them firm up and prevents breakage when decorating.
- Prepare ganache: Add chocolate chips to a small microwave-safe bowl and pour the heavy cream over them. Microwave for 45 seconds, then let the mixture rest for 1 minute before whisking until smooth and glossy.
- Decorate cookies: Once cookies are completely cool, spread about 1 tablespoon of ganache over each cookie. Immediately sprinkle crushed Oreos over the ganache and gently press gummy worms into the ganache while it is still wet to create a fun dirt and worm effect.
- Set ganache and serve: Allow the ganache to set completely before serving the cookies to enjoy the rich flavors and playful texture.
Notes
- Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-4 days, or in the refrigerator for up to a week if you prefer a firmer ganache, letting them come to room temperature before serving.
- For freezing, place cookies in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze until solid. Then transfer to a freezer-safe container or zip-top bag and freeze up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature before serving; note gummy worms texture may change slightly.
- If using a smaller 13.25 ounce cake mix box, reduce oil to 1/3 cup to maintain proper dough consistency.
