Ingredients
Scale
Flan Base
- 4 eggs
- 1 14 ounce can sweetened condensed milk
- 1 12 ounce can evaporated milk (or milk of your choice)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ cup Nutella
- 4 ounces dark chocolate for melting
Toppings
- Strawberries
- Blueberries
- Pomegranate arils
- Fresh mint leaves
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 325°F to prepare for baking the flan.
- Prepare Chocolate Milk: In a medium saucepan, heat almond milk, then add Nutella and dark chocolate. Stir constantly until the chocolate is fully melted and combined into a smooth chocolate mixture.
- Blend Chocolate Milk: Pour the warm chocolate milk mixture into a blender and blend for a few seconds until smooth and well combined.
- Mix Flan Ingredients: In a large bowl, beat the eggs until smooth. Gradually add the sweetened condensed milk, the blended chocolate milk, and vanilla extract. Mix well until the mixture is smooth and homogenous.
- Fill Molds: Pour the egg and chocolate mixture evenly into individual heart-shaped molds or ramekins.
- Prepare Water Bath: Place the filled ramekins in a 2-quart square baking dish. Pour boiling water into the baking dish until it reaches about 1 inch up the sides of the custard cups to create a water bath for even baking.
- Bake Flan: Place the baking dish on the oven rack and bake for 45 minutes or until a knife inserted in the center of the flan comes out clean.
- Cool Flan: Remove the ramekins from the oven and let them cool completely to room temperature, then refrigerate to chill and set fully for at least 1 hour.
- Unmold Flan: Before unmolding, let the chilled flan sit at room temperature for 10 minutes. Then dip the molds briefly in hot water for 5 seconds, tap sides to loosen, invert onto plates, and carefully slide the flan out.
- Garnish and Serve: Top each flan with fresh strawberries, blueberries, pomegranate arils, and mint leaves for a fresh and colorful presentation. Serve chilled.
Notes
- Allow flan to cool and chill properly before unmolding to ensure a smooth release.
- Use a shallow baking dish to create an effective water bath that cooks the flan evenly and prevents cracking.
- To loosen the flan, the hot water dip and gentle tapping are key steps to prevent breakage.
- Dark chocolate can be substituted with semi-sweet chocolate for a slightly sweeter flavor.
- Use heart-shaped silicone molds for easy unmolding if available.
